Julie knew the road as soon as Gray turned onto it. âYou are taking me to your cabin?â
âUh huh.â
âI thought we were going to discuss the state finals over breakfast.â
âAt the cabin.â
âStale Pop Tarts?â
âNo. As a matter of fact I have a fruit salad, scrambled eggs, bacon, and mimosas.â
âAt the cabin? How?â
âI packed a cooler with ice.â
âClever man.â
âWith so many items on the menu though, youâll have to help cook.â
âNot a worry. I can cook.â
âYes, you can.â
She stepped inside and stood, sweeping the room with her eyes. The cabin hadnât changed, but she had. She turned to look at Gray, but he had his back to her, rummaging around in the cooler, ferreting out the eggs and bacon. She joined him at the propane cook-top and helped prepare their meal.
He bumped against her gently as they worked, teasing playfully, his hands ever reaching for her hip, her waist, a shoulder, a ticklish rib.
âWatch those hands,â she groused.
âThe better to feel you with, my dear.â
She took a wooden spoon to his knuckles. âFocus.â
âI am.â
âOn breakfast.â
After they had eaten and cleared the table, Gray fixed them both another mimosa and unfurled a thick wad of blueprints across the tabletop.
âI have some news,â he said. âIâm going to build a house, a very large log cabin complete with running water, electricity, and heat. It will be a real home and I am going to build it very close to where we are now.â
âWhat brought this on?â
He shrugged. âI need a nicer place to take you.â
Julie was thunderstruck. âGray, you have an apartment in town.â
âIt doesnât feel right.â He closed his eyes. âWhen I think of you, Julie, I think of this mountain and the snow, the smell of wood smoke on your skin, your hand on my chest and your head on my shoulder.â
Julie swallowed.
âI held your body and your trust.â
âGray, Iâm sorry I canât give you more⦠of me.â
He gave her a tender smile. âWhat we share is enough.â
âAre you sure?â
He nodded. âSex isnât everything, you know.â
âHave you everâ¦â She let the question drop.
âNo,â he said, his expression pained. âI havenât.â
âDo you want to?â she asked.
He smiled, laughter in his eyes. âI am a man, Julie Hastings. Iâd be lying if I told you I didnât. Iâd be lying through my teeth if I told you that I didnât want to make love to you. But, when youâre ready, Julie. And not until.â
âThereâs been no one before me?â
He shook his head uncomfortably. âThere was a girl once, someone I liked very much, but her parents didnât approve.â
âWhy not?â she asked.
âThey didnât trust me with her,â he said softly. He lifted his eyes to meet hers. âI frighten many people, Julie. Itâs my size, my strength, my looks. Plusâ¦â
âPlus?â
âWell, my father didnât treat my mother very well.â
âI see,â she said, her voice was a whisper.
âI guess they thought, like father, like son,â he said. âI canât blame them.â
âThey were wrong.â
âThank you for saying so.â
He stared at her, his eyes soft. She swallowed. âWhere are you going to build your house?â
âJust beyond the ridge line.
